Corrections Policy
Charleston Sentinel is committed to accuracy in all our reporting. When we make mistakes, we correct them promptly and transparently.
Our Commitment to Accuracy
Accuracy is the foundation of credible journalism. Charleston Sentinel strives to verify all facts before publication, seek multiple sources for important claims, and provide fair representation of all parties in our coverage. Despite our best efforts, errors occasionally occur. When they do, we take responsibility and act quickly to correct the record.
Types of Corrections
Corrections
A correction is issued when we have published information that is factually inaccurate. This includes errors in names, dates, locations, statistics, quotes, or other verifiable facts. Corrections are appended to the original article with a clear notice explaining what was changed and when.
Clarifications
A clarification is issued when our original reporting was technically accurate but may have been unclear or missing important context that could lead readers to a misunderstanding. Clarifications explain what was added or modified to improve reader comprehension.
Editor's Notes
An editor's note may be added to provide additional context about a story, disclose potential conflicts of interest, or explain significant updates to developing stories. Editor's notes do not necessarily indicate an error occurred.
Retractions
In rare cases where the fundamental premise of a story is found to be false or the story should not have been published, we will issue a full retraction. The article will be removed from publication and replaced with a retraction notice explaining the circumstances.
How We Handle Corrections
- Investigation: When an error is reported, the responsible editor investigates the claim and reviews the original sourcing.
- Verification: If the error is confirmed, we determine the appropriate type of correction (correction, clarification, editor's note, or retraction).
- Publication: The correction is added to the original article with a clear timestamp and explanation. For significant errors, we may publish a separate correction notice.
- Logging: All corrections are logged on this page for transparency and accountability.
- Notification: When possible, we notify affected parties that a correction has been made.

Corrections on articles appear in the following format:
